The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) provides a full-service Emergency Department (ED) at each of its campuses – General and Birchmount – and each is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our ED is staffed by a comprehensive interprofessional health care team, including 50 physicians specializing in emergency medicine, who work together to provide care to more than 110,000 patients per year.

In 2009, TSH moved its General campus ED into the brand new Emergency and Critical Care Centre, The new centre includes two triage stations, five separate care zones, new infection control and isolation capacity, state-of-the-art equipment and private examination rooms.

What We Do

The Scarborough Hospital’s two Emergency Departments offer 24/7 emergency and urgent care, which includes:

  • Assessment and treatment
  • Stabilization and transfer to an appropriate area of care
  • Admittance or discharge with community follow up
  • A rapid assessment zone to expedite care for patients who are comfortable walking on their own who have a health issue that does not put them at immanent risk

Specialized Emergency Services

Paedlink

In an effort to provide the right care at the right time, the ED works in collaboration with colleagues in the Maternal Newborn and Child Care program to fast track children and their families to a specialized paediatric clinic, called Paedlink, available at both campuses.

The Paedlink program was implemented in 2007 as a way to quickly move children and their families from the ED and ease what can be a stressful experience for young patients.

PaedLink expedites the care of low acuity paediatric patients (triage levels 3, 4 and 5) away from the ED to the Paedlink clinic on the Paediatric Unit. Paedlink has helped reduce ED wait times by 42 per cent, to less than three hours.

Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Care Centre

The Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Care Centre (SA/DVCC) at The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is highly regarded for the exceptional care it provides to meet the sensitive needs of a vulnerable population. With care that is offered 24 hours a day to men, women and transgendered individuals who have been sexually assaulted or experienced intimate partner violence, the centre is a vital service in the Scarborough community.

Emergency response is available at both hospital campuses to ensure all patients receive appropriate and timely access to treatment and counselling.
