I view a hospital as a ‘city within a city’ – a true reflection of the community it serves. To be successful, a hospital must reach out to its community in various forms to better understand their needs and respond to them accordingly. One of the most important ways a hospital is able to do this is through the work of its Foundation.

Here at TSH, our Foundation is an important voice of the hospital and plays this essential role in relationship building within our community. Over the last few years, these partnerships have allowed the Foundation to make significant strides in raising funds to help improve health care for the residents of Scarborough.

As staff members, physicians and volunteers at TSH, we demonstrate our commitment to outstanding patient care each and every day. However, when we support our hospital as donors to the Foundation, we create a different sort of connection to the organization that allows us to become even more “invested” in where we work.

The Scarborough Hospital Foundation has created a number of easy and innovative ways for those who work or volunteer at the hospital to give back. Most recently, on January 3 the Foundation launched its “Lucky Duck Payday Lottery”. As a 50/50 draw, there’s a chance to win while supporting a great cause.

Early last year, the Foundation launched the Score for Your Floor fundraising initiative as another way to engage staff on a personal level. Score for Your Floor enables a unit or department to raise funds for equipment that they have identified as a need and that will improve patient care. Last fall, the CP4 and 3 Central Medicine units at the General campus celebrated the successful completion of the hospital’s first Score for Your Floor campaign and purchased a new bladder scanner for their units. CP4 and 3 Central raised an impressive $8,000 towards the $16,000 total cost of the bladder scanner. The remaining $8,000 was matched by a very generous donor. In the near future, we will be announcing two new departments who will be conducting Score for Your Floor campaigns.

Even donations through regular payroll deductions not only make a huge difference to the hospital, but also provide the benefit of a tax receipt.

In addition to these internal fundraising campaigns, there are a variety of events held throughout the year that you can support. These include our annual Scarborough World Gala, World Cup of Cricket and World Cup of Golf, as well as walk-a-thons and picnics organized by individuals and organizations who want to give back to their community hospital.

No matter how or when they give, all donors give for different reasons. Each has a story and it all comes down to having an intrinsic need to support their fellow citizen.

As hospital staff, physicians or volunteers we have the added bonus of being able to see the benefits of our support first hand. Whether it’s a new MRI machine, improvements to our Cancer Care or Chronic Kidney Disease programs, or simply upgrading equipment, we know that our donations make as much of a difference as the exemplary service we provide to our patients, their families and our community.
