Jagdish Butany

Jagdish has over 30 years of experience in medical practice, education and research. A cardiovascular pathologist, Jagdish has been the Director of the Autopsy Service at the University Health Network since 1991. Jagdish has been teaching at the University of Toronto since 1982, becoming a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in 2001. During his teaching years, Jagdish has received awards from the Toronto General Hospital, the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology and from the Faculty of Medicine including the J.B. Walter Prize for Teaching Excellence in 1993 and The W.T. Aikens Awards for Individual Teaching in 1995.

Jagdish’s extensive research interest is the heart and, more specifically, coronary arteries and prosthetic cardiovascular devices. Jagdish has over 200 peer reviewed journal articles, several book chapters and numerous other presentations. He has been an invited visiting professor and keynote speaker at national and international universities and conferences.

Jagdish has held the Board position of Co-Editor-in-Chief of Cardiovascular Pathology for two terms and he serves on the Editorial Boards of several medical journals. Currently, Jagdish is the President of the Canadian Association of Pathologists (2006 - 2009) and the President of the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology (2007 - 2009). In addition, Jagdish serves on numerous hospital and university committees and is currently the Director of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Toronto.

Jasgish received his M.B.B.S. in Medicine at the University of Mysore in 1971 and his M.S. in General Surgery in 1975 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. Moving to Canada in 1975, Jagdish trained in Anatomical Pathology at the University of Toronto and obtained his Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Anatomic Pathology in 1979. Jagdish has received numerous awards and honours during his professional career.
