The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is home to the largest Regional Nephrology Program in North America with over 6,000 patients receiving care. It is one of 26 Regional Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) programs in Ontario and one of three CKD programs with the Central East LHIN.
The Scarborough Regional Nephrology Program (TSRNP) consists of the following services:
The program has linkages with a tertiary hospital (St. Michael’s Hospital) for transplantation and linkages with community programs such as Carefirst Seniors and Community Services Association for day treatment.
TSRDP has four hemodialysis satellites: Yee Hong satellite, 78 Corporate Drive satellite, Bridgepoint Hospital, and Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH). The satellites and the In Centre HD unit currently operate three shifts per day, six days per week (0700 to 2300 hrs.). There are 49 stations (including isolation capacity) operating at the In Centre HD unit, 18 stations at the Corporate Drive satellite, 12 stations at Yee Hong, six stations at Bridgepoint Health for Complex Continuing Care residents requiring hemodialysis, and another 18 stations at TEGH.
The Chiropody clinics specialize in treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the foot.
At the Diabetes Education Centre we provide education for patients with Diabetes Mellitus. The goal of this program is to enable patients to cope positively and gain independence in living with diabetes. Working collaboratively with our community partners to ensure patients have access to diabetes education in the care setting they require.
The Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Program is an outpatient program with referrals being received from a nephrologist of The Scarborough Regional Nephrology program. The program provides patients assessment, treatment, care, education and teaching to maintain a state of wellness despite their chronic kidney disease. Patients who progress in their CKD are presented with treatment options and are supported in learning and preparing for the initiation of their treatment choice i.e. dialysis.
Patients may be followed in the CKD Program clinics every 1-6 months where their kidney function and overall well being is monitored. In addition to assessment, treatment, follow-up and comprehensive patient education, the CKD program also includes Renal Diabetic Management and Vascular clinic.
The Home Dialysis Program includes both Home Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and Home Hemodialysis (HHD). The Home Dialysis program assists patients and/or their families perform their chosen home-based dialysis independently in the comfort of their home.
All equipment and supplies are provided by the program and are delivered directly to the patient’s home. Home dialysis is associated with a higher quality of life as it minimizes disruption to activities associated with daily living.
The program provides teaching and training for patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and their families to enable independent treatment at home. Home Dialysis patients are assessed every six weeks by the interdisciplinary team; blood work, nutrition, and treatment prescription is reviewed and adjustments made based on the assessment.
The SRNP also supports PD in partnered Scarborough nursing homes (Yee Hong, Mon Sheong and Rockcliffe). These nursing home staff members are trained in the care and maintenance of the PD, and the SRNP provides backup emergency call and support on an ongoing basis.

The program currently has 44 operating stations (three shifts/per day, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., six days per week) at the main hospital unit. There are 18 stations at the Corporate Drive satellite, six stations at Bridgepoint Health for LTC residents requiring hemodialysis, and another 12 stations at Yee Hong.
Corporate Drive and Bridgepoint satellites operate three shifts per day, six days per week. The Bridgepoint Health Hemodialysis unit is staffed by TSH staff.
Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) is considered a satellite of The Scarborough Hospital as well and has 18 stations but is staffed by TEGH staff.
