Palliative Clinic

TSH Out-Patient Palliative Clinic strives to promote satisfaction among patients living with life-threatening illness. The clinic functions to ensure patients remain as comfortable, alert and active as possible, while focusing on quality of life. This care clinic operates two afternoons per week.  Patients may be referred by the oncologist, family doctor or other specialist. 

The purpose of the clinic is:

  • To provide coordinated services to seriously and terminally ill patients in the out-patient setting
  • To offer out-patient assessment, consultation, treatment and follow-up for patients and families with symptom management or care planning issues
  • To provide expertise in pain management and other symptoms, such as fatigue, depression, nausea and shortness of breath
  • To educate patients and families about palliative care and proper use of medications
  • To refer and link patients and families with community supports
  • To facilitate admission into a palliative care unit when appropriate

In-Patient Palliative Care

The Scarborough Hospital provides excellent care to patients and families facing life-threatening illness.  The Palliative Care Unit’s (PCU) trained team of health professionals are committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive symptom management, psychological and spiritual support, reactivation and/or terminal care in a supportive environment.

The PCU has a combination of warmly decorated private and semi-private patient care rooms and a bright family lounge where patients, families/caregivers have access to a small kitchenette and table and chairs.  There is a designated quiet room on the unit reserved for prayer, meditation or counselling that patients and families can use for their peace and comfort.

Criteria for patients appropriate for Palliative Care Unit admission include:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Patients or primary caregiver residing within the Scarborough area; or patients who have previously received care at TSH; or patients who have received care from a TSH affiliated physician
  • Patients who have a terminal/life threatening illness, including either malignant or non-malignant illness
  • Patients who are no longer receiving curative treatment; or require specialized symptom management; or support for their underlying life threatening illness
  • Expected length of stay for PCU admission is less than 30 days
  • Patients and/or substitute decision maker (SDM) is in agreement with the philosophy of palliative care
