Ethics is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of good and differentiating right from wrong. It involves critical thinking about how we live and act, analyzing how our values inform our behaviours, and giving reasons for why some choices are better than others.
Ethics at The Scarborough Hospital
Every day, decisions are made in healthcare which may be considered ‘ethical’ in that they cannot be answered without appealing to values. For this reason, The Scarborough Hospital has a strong Ethics program that strives to produce a positive and healthy ethical climate in which:
Under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, you have a right of access to your own personal health information.
How do I access my medical record?
Patients requiring copies of their medical records must submit a written request to the hospital where you were treated (Birchmount Campus or General Campus). You can also download the Request Access to Personal Health Information form, complete and submit it to the Health Records Department. Your request will be processed in the shortest time possible, although we have 30 days to respond to any request.
The Scarborough Hospital now has two full-time interpreters – one who speaks Tamil and one who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese – to better serve our global community. These interpreters are based in our Emergency Departments and are available to assist with communication between hospital staff and patients and their families in the Emergency Departments and throughout the hospital.
The Scarborough Hospital has developed a brochure that answers some of our patients’ most commonly-asked questions.
Sections in the brochure include how to contact Patient Relations, Visiting Hours, Patient Participation, Privacy, and Useful Information for Patients and Visitors.

The Scarborough Hospital is proud to have partnered with Philips Lifeline to provide to the community the Lifeline service. We take comfort in knowing that our patients can continue to live confidently and independently in their homes with the reassurance that help is available at the push of a button.
Lifeline is an easy-to-use medical alarm service that lets you summon help any time of the day or night—even if you can’t speak. All you have to do is press your Personal Help Button, worn on a wristband or pendant, and a trained Personal Response Centre Associate will ensure you get help fast.

Patients and visitors at The Scarborough Hospital can now enjoy free wireless access to our guest wi-fi network, allowing users to send and receive email and surf the internet on their own wireless-enabled laptops or devices.
The guest network is available in all patient areas of the hospital.
