At the General campus, this service is part of the Family Care Clinic, which offers a wide range of services for mothers and babies after they are discharged from the Family Maternity Centre or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). All mothers are given an appointment to return with their babies within three days of discharge.
A nursing assessment is done on each mother and infant. A pediatrician sees and assesses each infant for hydration (fluid status), nutrition, weight gain, jaundice, overall appearance of infant, etc. If needed, an infant can be re-admitted to either the NICU or Pediatrics Unit for further care, such as phototherapy for jaundice.
After the nursing assessment of the mother, the obstetrician on call will see the mother in the clinic if required. The clinic is staffed by nurses responsible for doing the nursing assessments as well as providing counselling for baby care, exercise, breastfeeding/nutrition etc. If necessary, social work, breastfeeding clinic, homecare and public health referrals can be made.
