General campus NFS Manager Susan Bull talks with RVHS Support Services Leader Rohan Gonsalves

One of the major goals of The Scarborough Hospital’s ReFRESHing our Menu project is to inspire another hospital to undertake a similar project. On November 14, TSH took an important step in this direction by hosting Rouge Valley Health System Support Services Leader Rohan Gonsalves.

“Rouge Valley Health System is currently completing a patient meal satisfaction study and we were very interested in visiting The Scarborough Hospital to gain a better understanding of how the hospital is implementing its new meal process and the expected impact on food satisfaction scores,” said Rohan.

General campus Nutrition and Food Services Manager Susan Bull provided a full tour of the General campus kitchen and overview of the ReFRESHing our Menu project.

“It was exciting to be able to profile the hard work and dedication that is going into this innovative project to one of my peers,” said Susan.

The tour showcased the many modifications that are being made to the kitchen. This includes a cold room that has been renovated into a cold cellar to store fresh produce, new equipment that will be installed in the hot prep area, and a new ‘pod’ food assembly system that will replace the current beltline. In addition, there was a discussion about the new bedside ordering process and the IT that will be used to support it.

“What’s great about this project is that it’s driven by patient values and the responses that constantly come up in patient satisfaction surveys,” said Rohan. “This process is often seen in the U.S., but not so much in Canada and it’s going to truly improve the entire patient experience at The Scarborough Hospital.”
