The Regional Crisis Programs allow for continued service for individuals based on urgency of need. The Scarborough Hospital services a large and extremely multicultural population. Individuals’ unique needs are considered, including those of individuals currently accessing other mental health services as well as those accessing the mental health system for the first time.  The Regional Crisis Programs are fully integrated and coordinated within the TSH Mental Health Services and the broader mental health system.  The goal of this program is to maintain individuals in their homes versus hospitalization.

The following are TSH crisis programs:

Hospital Crisis Program

This program is offered through the Birchmount Campus Emergency Department. As TSH is the designated Regional Crisis Program for Scarborough, we have an on-site crisis worker available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to see individuals who come into our Emergency Department and are in experiencing an emotional or psychiatric crisis.  For the overnight hours from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. these services are extended to all Scarborough residents.

Mobile Crisis Program

This program provides Telephone Crisis Response on a 24 hour, 7-day per week basis and community crisis response to individuals over 16 years of age who are experiencing a mental health crisis in Scarborough and East York.  It is one of the three main mobile teams covering Metropolitan Toronto.

Short-Term Case Management

The Short-Term Case Management (STCM) Program provides an easily accessible, immediately available, case management service to individuals who have been in contact with any one of our Mental Health Services and who do not have existing supports.

The immediate team involvement with individuals being discharged to the community fills gaps that occur when individuals are "between" services.

The STCM will work with individuals until they are well connected with MHS or other community resources.

Mobile Crisis Intervention Team

The Mobile Crisis intervention Team (MCIT) is a collaborative partnership between TSH and the Toronto Police Service (TPS).  This program provides community crisis response to individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis. A trained police-mental health team is provided to assess needs, intervene, de-escalate and ensure connection to appropriate services.  The MCIT team provides secondary response to 911 calls involving individuals experiencing a psychiatric or emotional crisis requiring intervention to ensure safety.  This program services all of Scarborough.

MCIT responds only to calls received from the Toronto Police Services via 911 dispatch or police radio calls.
