Local grocer’s gifts total almost $40,000 in seven years
A dollar or two at the checkout at Michael’s No Frills has added up to almost $40,000 for The Scarborough Hospital. A partnership between the Kennedy Rd. and Steeles Ave. grocer, its employees and customers has resulted in overwhelming support for The Scarborough Hospital’s Equip to Care campaign. Since 2003, Michael’s No Frills has donated the money raised through cash donations from employees and customers, helping to purchase medical equipment for the hospital.
“We feel it’s important to support The Scarborough Hospital,” says Michael Lo Presti, Owner of Michael’s No Frills. “Many people in the community have received some type of care from the hospital, be it lifesaving or simply fixing broken bones. A strong hospital is important to the success of a community and as such, we can look forward to continuing to support it.”
Donations to the Equip to Care campaign help to purchase urgently needed medical equipment like neonatal incubators and ventilators. Third-party fundraising efforts like this one bring together families, friends and colleagues in innovative community projects that help support local healthcare. In 2009, The Scarborough Hospital had 99,915 emergency visits and 397,814 out-patient visits. Each patient has different needs that are met through the generous contributions of the Scarborough community. The Foundation welcomes donations from organizations, social clubs and schools, who dedicate their time, effort and resources to help purchase equipment for the hospital.
“Words cannot express how grateful The Scarborough Hospital is to Michael’s No Frills’ employees and customers for their continued commitment,” says Guy Bonnell, TSH Foundation VP, Community Development. “They have participated in several fundraising events in support of the hospital, including our annual hockey tournament. Gifts from the community go a long way to helping our healthcare team deliver the best possible care.”
