Personalities by Justin Buenaflor

Aspiring artists from Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School were given one word: tempest. Their assignment was to create art that explored the literal and metaphorical concept of the storms that sweep through our environment and our lives.

Twelve of those artists have their work on display at The Scarborough Hospital’s Gallery, General campus.

Images of the works can be viewed on The Scarborough Hospital’s Facebook page.

“It’s a great honour, a privilege, and we’re thankful to the hospital for doing this,” says John Notten, Visual Arts Instructor at Mary Ward CSS. “When displayed at the school, the art doesn’t get this kind of public exposure. Here, people’s attention is drawn to this gallery space which, by the way, is really beautiful. The art, while the same pieces we show at school, takes on a whole per persona here.”

For Justin Buenaflor, seeing his three-panel artwork, entitled ‘Personalities,’ displayed at TSH’s Gallery makes him very proud.

“It was a very difficult assignment. I paint a certain way and don’t conform to other painting styles but my own,” he explains. “It took a lot out of me; there were some tears. But in the end, I’m very happy with it.”

The art created by grade 11 and 12 students at Mary Ward CSS will be on display until the end of June.
