Former Leaf captain Rick Vaive and gold medal Olympian Lori Dupuis with the Peter Zezel Memorial Cup.
Former Toronto Maple Leafs players will be joined by Women’s Olympic Hockey medalists at the 2nd Annual Scarborough World Cup of Hockey. They will lace up their skates to support The Scarborough Hospital in a one-day fundraising tournament on April 1, 2011.
This fundraiser brings together community organizations and local businesses with world-class hockey players at the Angus Glen Community Centre.
Teams compete for the coveted Peter Zezel Memorial Cup—in memory of Scarborough native and former Toronto Maple Leaf Peter Zezel. Zezel, who played for the Maple Leafs in the early 1990s, died in May 2009 of a rare blood disorder at the age of 44. A long-time friend of The Scarborough Hospital, Zezel supported many hospital fundraisers over the years.
Joining former Leaf Captain Rick Vaive and former Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flame defenseman Ric Nattress are NHL Alumni Tom Fergus, Denis Maruk, Lou Franceschetti, Dan Daoust, Bill Derlago, Demtri Mironov, Greg Hotham, Jimmy Jones, Mark Laforest, Mike Krushelnyski and Wes Jarvis. An exciting addition to this year’s roster are former members of the Canadian Women’s Olympic Hockey Team: Lori Dupuis, Becky Kellar and Scarborough-born and -raised Vicky Sunohara.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go towards the purchase of two defibrillators, one for each campus of The Scarborough Hospital. Defibrillators are used to help people who have suffered a heart attack, re-establishing heart rhythm by delivering an electric shock. The latest technology in defibrillators requires less energy to restore a normal heart rhythm and lowers the risk of burns and damage to the heart.
“It is such an honour to host these hockey legends, whose participation guarantees an exciting day for our sponsors and teams, as well as helping TSH stay equipped to care for our global community,” says Michael Mazza, President and CEO of The Scarborough Hospital Foundation.
