It was a family affair for the Vallanis, who brought offerings of food, a donation and many heartfelt thanks to the multidisciplinary team at the Birchmount campus ICU.

Madat Vallani spent close to a month in ICU before being transferred to another floor. His wife Nasim and his family were so appreciative of the commitment to care that Madat received while he was being treated in ICU that they all wanted to give special thanks to the team.

“My husband was brought to Birchmount because there was no room at our local hospital. And I am so glad we came here because the care and treatment that he was given, the nurses, the doctors, the whole team have been an amazing source of not only expertise, but they went beyond the call of duty,” says Nasim. “It was almost like a service to humanity, they way they served us. And not just my husband, but also tending to his family and me by keeping us informed of his progress.

“They are an amazing group of people.”

In a letter addressed to the entire ICU team, Nasim writes, “My family and I were extremely scared, nervous and daunted by the fear of the unknown regarding Madat’s prognosis, but they (ICU staff) were all very kind and patient and reassuring, which took away a lot of our apprehension.”

“The staff demonstrated their total commitment to caring for Madat while he was in ICU and gave my family and me the support and encouragement we needed to help pull him through.”

The letter singles out the nurses for round-the-clock care, Drs. Finkelstein, Rose and Hillmer, respiratory therapists, physiotherapist and dieticians.

“These were people whom I saw on a daily basis and whom I became particularly close to during Madat’s stay in the ICU,” Nasim states. “However, I’d also like to thank all the other staff, too numerous to mention, who all played such an important part in his treatment and recovery.”
