Where to Find Help

When you arrive at The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) for your appointment or overnight visit, there are Information Desks located at the emergency department entrances at each campus. The desks are staffed by volunteers who can answer your questions and help you find your way.

Volunteer Services also offer Call Ahead for Volunteer Assistance (CAVA), for anyone planning to visit TSH, but specifically geared towards those living with accessibility challenges. It provides a 24-hour answering service, which patients or loved ones can call the day before their scheduled appointment to “reserve” a volunteer who will meet them at their most convenient entrance. Patients are welcome, and encouraged, to contact the CAVA program at 416-438-2911 ext. 6846 or cava@filtr@tsh.to to reserve their volunteer.

If you are admitted to The Scarborough Hospital (TSH), you will be staying overnight. The information provided below is to help ensure you are prepared for your stay.

What Do I Bring?

  • Ontario Health Card
  • Social Insurance Card or number
  • Other health insurance card(s)
  • A valid credit card (Visa, American Express, or MasterCard) or debit card
  • Proof of insurance coverage for semi or private accommodation
  • Personal toiletry items (no scented products please)
  • Night clothes, bathrobe and slippers (non-skid soles)
  • Cell phone, tablet or laptop
  • Children may wish to bring a favorite toy or game
  • A small amount of cash for parking, newspapers, magazines, etc.

What Should I Leave At Home?

  • Irreplaceable papers or documents
  • Valuable/sentimental jewelry and clothing
  • Unnecessary amount of cash
  • Alcoholic beverages, tobacco products
  • Any electrical plug-in appliances (e.g. TV, VCR, hairdryer)

Valuables

Please leave all valuables at home. Besides your telephone and/or TV fee, please do not bring more than $10 for personal use. All jewelry will be removed during your stay, so it is best to leave it at home.

Please note that TSH is committed to the timely admission of all patients to the first available bed. This means that you may be admitted to a room with a male or female patient.

Ontario Residents

  • Ontario residents with valid Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage are not charged for standard hospital services, including unit rooms
  • Private or semi-private rooms, ambulance services, uninsured procedures, TV and telephone rentals, crutches/canes/casts, and other supplemental services are available at an additional cost
  • If your procedure is not covered by OHIP, you must pay in advance
  • If you do not have OHIP coverage, you may be required to pay a deposit to the hospital at the time of admission
  • The balance of your account will be due upon discharge from the hospital
  • The hospital does not bill insurance companies

Other Canadian Residents

  • All Canadian residents insured in their province are covered for standard services in Ontario. You must provide a valid copy of your health card from your home province
  • Ambulance services are not covered for residents outside Ontario, and cost $240
  • Non-residents, visitors and Canadian residents who do not have provincial health care coverage must pay for all charges incurred (including tests and other procedures)

General campus

Parking is available in the Visitor’s Parking Garage located on the west side of the hospital. The entrance to the lot is off of Lawrence Avenue East. Pay stations are located in the Main Entrance and in the Medical Mall across from Rexall.

Birchmount campus

Parking is available in the Visitor’s Parking Lot located on the north side of the hospital. Limited short-term meter parking is available outside the Emergency Department, and is for emergency use only. Pay stations are located on the Main Floor and in the covered kiosk in the Visitor parking lot.

Daily Rates:

  • 1/2 hour or less: $4
  • 1 hour or less: $8
  • 1 1/2 hours or less: $12
  • Over 1 1/2 hours: $16
  • 1-Day Pass – allows in and out privileges: $20

Lost ticket pays a maximum 24-hour rate.

Rates apply for each 24-hour period.

Patients and visitors may also pay by credit card as they leave the hospital at exit stations located at the parking gates. The pay stations are equipped with an intercom system that is linked to the Parking Office and assistance is available 24/7.

Long-Term Rates:

The following parking rates are effective October 1, 2016. These passes allow for in and out privileges.

  • 5-Day H-Pass ($40) allows access for five non-consecutive days
  • 10-Day H-Pass ($80) allows access for 10 non-consecutive days
  • 30-Day H-Pass ($240) allows access for 30 non-consecutive days

Patients and visitors who require long-term H-Pass parking can purchase these passes through the parking office at each campus, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Payment methods include credit and cash.

All proceeds from parking support The Scarborough Hospital Foundation and are reinvested into the hospital to enhance the quality of care for our patients.

At The Scarborough Hospital (TSH), we believe that you should understand as much as you can about your health, illness, treatments or tests. This will help you and your health care team work together to make the best decisions possible about your health and well-being.

Below are some tips to help you make the most out of your health care visit.

  1. Write down your questions so you will be prepared when you speak with your health care provider. Ask them to explain, in plain language, anything you do not understand.
  2. Tell your health care provider about your past illnesses, and about any new or different symptoms you are having.
  3. Bring all of your medicines, including vitamins, over-the-counter and herbal remedies when you go to the hospital or when you visit your health care provider.
  4. Inform your health care provider if you follow a special diet for health reasons such as a healthy heart diet, or for religious or cultural reasons, such vegetarian or Halal. Please also inform your health care provider if you have any particular dietary requirements.
  5. Tell a member of your health care team if you’ve ever had an allergic or bad reaction to any food or medicine, and ensure you receive an allergy band.
  6. Please be ready for discharge by 9 a.m. on the day you are going home, and ensure you know what to do when you get home.
  7. Ask questions if you do not understand tests you are having, what medication you are being given or anytime you feel uncomfortable or uncertain about what is happening.

TV/Phone rental services are provided by Hospitality Network. A portion of the revenue from rental services are returned to The Scarborough Hospital – and reinvested in caring for you!

For information on renting a TV/Phone during your stay, or turn the TV on in the patient room and follow the directions.

There is a flat rate fee for the activation and use of the telephone during your stay. In order to ensure that you have a phone during the entire length of your admission this should be paid on pre-registration during your Pre-Admit Lab appointment. If payment is not made in advance you may experience a delay in the activation of your telephone.

The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is pleased to offer patients and visitors free wireless access through our guest wi-fi network. This allows users to send and receive email, and surf the Internet on their own wireless-enabled laptops or mobile devices.

The guest network is available in all patient areas of the hospital.

Connect Using Windows (may vary depending upon system version)

  1. Click the Start menu in the lower left corner of your screen
  2. Choose Connect To
  3. Select TSHGuest from the list of networks. Click Connect
  4. Open your web browser (Internet Explorer, for example)
  5. You are now free to use the internet for email or surfing

Connect Using Mac OSX

  1. Select System Preferences from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen
  2. Click the Network icon
  3. Make sure Airport is turned on, and select TSHGuest from the Network Name menu
  4. Click Apply in the lower right hand corner of the Network window
  5. Open your web browser (Safari, for example)
  6. You are now free to use the internet for email or surfing

For other wireless devices including iPhone, iPod Touch, PSP, Blackberry or similar devices, please consult your user manual for instructions on accessing wireless networks.
