The Palliative Care program at The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) provides compassionate care, comprehensive symptom management, emotional support and spiritual support to patients and families facing a life-limiting illness. The interprofessional team works together to ensure patients remain as comfortable as possible, while focusing on quality of life.

What We Offer

TSH provides high-quality and supportive palliative care to patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings:

Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic:

The Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic currently operates at the General campus providing:

  • Coordinated services to patients living with a life-limiting illness
  • Assessment, consultation, treatment and follow-up to address symptom management and care planning needs
  • Expertise in pain management and other symptoms such as fatigue, depression, nausea and shortness of breath
  • Referrals and links to community supports
  • Assistance in facilitating admission into a palliative care unit when appropriate

The Palliative Consultation Service:

The Palliative Care Consultation Service provides:

  • Assessment, education and support for palliative and end of life care for our patients that may not be on our inpatient palliative care unit
  • The team includes both a Clinical Resource Leader specialized in palliative care along with our Palliative Care physician team

Inpatient Palliative Care:

The Inpatient Palliative Care Unit provides:

  • Patient and family-centred care delivered by an interprofessional health care team including Palliative Care physicians, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, a social worker, chaplains, a registered dietitian, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, a clinical resource Leader, and the patient care manager
  • Warmly decorated private and semi-private patient rooms.
  • Patients, families and caregivers have access to a bright kitchenette.
  • A quiet room reserved for prayer, meditation or counselling that patients and families can use for comfort.


The Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic provides services for individuals who:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Reside in the Scarborough area
  • Have a life-limiting illness  (cancer or non-cancer diagnosis)
  • Require supportive care, which may include specialized symptom management or support for their underlying life-limiting illness

The Inpatient Palliative Care Unit provides services to individuals who:

  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Reside in the Scarborough area; or have previously received care at TSH or from a TSH affiliated physician
  • Have a terminal or life-limiting illness (cancer or non-cancer diagnosis) that requires acute palliative care supportive interventions
  • Have an expected length of stay that is less than 30 days
  • Is in agreement, or has a substitute decision-maker who is in agreement, with the philosophy of palliative care
  • Require specialized symptom management or acute supportive care for an underlying illness
