even individuals, with extensive experience in obstetrics, paediatrics, surgery, anesthesiology, nursing, midwifery and community leadership, have been named as members of the Expert Panel reviewing The Scarborough Hospital’s (TSH) Maternal Newborn and Women’s Health, and Surgical Models. The panel has been put in place in response to the Central East Local Health Integration Network’s (Central East LHIN) Board of Directors motion of March 27, 2013, which called upon TSH to convene a panel of physicians, healthcare professionals and community leaders to review the proposed consolidation of Maternal Newborn services at the Birchmount campus and the consolidation of same day/short stay surgery at Birchmount with more complex surgeries with overnight stays at the General campus.
The panel members, whose current roles are further outlined in the attached backgrounder, include:
Dr. R. Blair Egerdie, Surgeon
Dr. Lennox Huang, Paediatrician
Dr. Craig Irish, Anesthesiologist
Dr. Nicholas A. Leyland, Obstetrician
Bobbi Soderstrom, Midwife
Silvie Crawford, RN
Odette Maharaj, Community Leader.
One additional member of the panel, an Emergency Department physician, will be identified in the coming days
The panel members will receive pre-registered delegations on Friday, May 31, from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., at the Scarborough Civic Centre in the Council Chambers. Individuals who want to be received as a delegation must pre-register by eMail or telephone. Delegations will be allotted 10 minutes to present and must provide a document to the panel. Presentations made to the Expert Panel will be videotaped and posted on TSH’s website after May 31. Written submissions will also be accepted from individuals unable to attend on May 31.
Based on the presentations and input received to date, the Expert Panel will prepare a report, which will be presented to the Central East LHIN Board at its June 24 meeting. The results of the Expert Panel review will help inform the development of a Service Delivery Model for Maternal-Child-Youth (MCY) services for Scarborough and support the facilitated integration process, both of which involve The Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System, Centenary campus.
“This Expert Panel review supports the requests made by the local MPPs and the Minister of Health and Long- Term Care that a further review of the hospital’s proposed changes be carried out,” said Deborah Hammons, CEO, Central East LHIN. “I am pleased that the hospital is moving forward with this review and look forward to receiving the Panel’s report.”
“The Scarborough Hospital welcomes the opportunity to have a panel of experts complete a detailed review of the proposed integration plans. Their experience and advice will be invaluable in ensuring that identified risks are fully addressed to ensure we maintain safe patient care for our community,” said Robert Biron, President and CEO, TSH.
