he members of the Expert Panel for The Scarborough Hospital’s (TSH) Maternal Newborn and Women’s Health and Surgical Models Review received 34 delegations plus 12 submissions on Friday, May 31 at the Scarborough Civic Centre.
The Expert Panel, comprised of physician, nursing and midwife leaders from other Ontario communities and a local community leader, was established in response to the Central East Local Health Integration Network’s (Central East LHIN) Board of Directors motion of March 27, 2013. The motion required TSH to convene an expert panel to review the proposed consolidation of maternal newborn services at the Birchmount campus and consolidation of same day/short stay surgeries at Birchmount with more complex surgeries consolidated at the General campus.
The panel members are:
Dr. R. Blair Egerdie, Surgeon
Dr. Paul Ellis, Emergency Department
Dr. Lennox Huang, Paediatrician
Dr. Craig Irish, Anesthesiologist
Dr. Nicholas A. Leyland, Obstetrician
Bobbi Soderstrom, Midwife
Silvie Crawford, RN
Odette Maharaj, Community Leader.
Based on the feedback and documentation provided to date, along with information collected as part of the delegation process, the Expert Panel will prepare a report to address the concerns and risks identified through their review process. It is anticipated that the Panel’s report will be delivered to The Scarborough Hospital’s Board of Directors at their Wednesday, June 19 board meeting. Following that presentation, it will be provided to the Central East LHIN Board of Directors at their meeting on Monday, June 24.
The report will help inform the current integration planning discussions between The Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System, which is in response to another Central East LHIN motion passed at the March 27th meeting.
“On behalf of The Scarborough Hospital team, we extend our appreciation to the members of the Expert Review Panel for providing their time and expertise that will help guide our future planning activities,” says Robert Biron, President and CEO of The Scarborough Hospital. “As we transform our health services to meet the provincial Action Plan for Health Care, our primary goal is to ensure that the care we offer to the Scarborough community is safe and of the highest quality; and I know that’s a goal shared by all the Panel members.”
“The LHIN looks forward to receiving the report at its open board meeting,” said Deborah Hammons, CEO, Central East LHIN. “We would like to thank The Scarborough Hospital for responding to our Board’s direction and thank all those who participated in this important process.”
