Today’s health care environment is one that is filled with constant change. As hospital staff, physicians and volunteers working in the face of these challenges, the importance of taking time to address our own personal well-being cannot be overstated.
TSH is part of a growing number of Ontario hospitals that have taken a more comprehensive and systemic view to their workplace environments and implemented the Ontario Hospital Association’s Quality Healthcare Workplace model. This model is based on the premise that the quality of the work environment for staff and physicians is a key determinant of a high performing health care organization.
TSH has implemented a number of initiatives as part of this commitment to a healthy workplace.
Most recently, we rejuvenated our entire wellness program, aptly naming it “Balance – Make Health Happen”. As part of this renewal, we established Exhale wellness centres at each campus, which provide a quiet space for staff to relax and refresh outside of busy work areas. Wellness options also include mini-massages that can be scheduled on your units, a smoking cessation program and a Weight Watchers at work program.
Staff looking to include some exercise into their busy day can take advantage of the hospital’s 24-hour onsite fitness centres at each campus, which offer a variety of classes, including yoga, cardio, strength training and dance.
I am also excited to hear that our hospital has registered its fair share of teams for the 2014 Inter-Hospital Health Challenge this month. This event encourages hospital staff teams of four to six to work together to enhance their health and wellness. Points are logged on an interactive website monitored by University Health Network and can be easily earned by being physically active, eating healthy, staying hydrated and participating in stress reducing activities as simple as reconnecting with an old friend. Registration is open until May 7, so there’s still time to register a team and participate in this fun and easy challenge!
Recognizing and celebrating the outstanding commitment you make to our hospital and community is another essential component of our healthy workplace. Programs include the annual recognition ceremonies, long-service recognition dinner, as well as a variety of staff appreciation events.
These are just some of our many fitness and wellness programs. I encourage you to visit our Healthy Workplace page on iConnect to learn more about the other onsite and offsite opportunities.
